Halloween Buffy

The following are the best episodes of Buffy to watch on Halloween:
#1 is Hush. But please note that it was not without it's comedic moments. One, ">Two, ">Three, ">Four, ">Five
#2 Halloween. From this episode on everyone makes sure to wear a costume that they can slay in.

#3 Fear Itself. Here we discover how terrifying a bunny can be.

#4 Buffy vs Dracula. Pretty self explanatary. It's hilarious. Everything you could want from a weak minded Xander. :)
#5 Tabula Rasa. It's a mixed up Buffy episode of fun and skeletons. Below is where they fall asleep and they wake up with their memories erased.

It's Here!

Good morning and happy Halloween!
It was so refreshing walking out of my door this morning, seeing all of the pretty colorful leaves on the trees on the trees and even on the ground. The sky was overcast and I just spent about thirty minutes at the store getting some last minute supplies. Chocolate milk and necco wafers make the perfect breakfast, don't you think?

Uh...the whole movie.

Edward Scissorhands.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I still feel like Jonny Depp is a minor in the Halloween realm. Maybe because he hasn't done enough live action Halloween movies yet. Allan Arkin is a wonderful actor. The deadpan humor alone. Of course, the beginning still makes me giggle. What is an Avon sales lady to do when she exhausts the goodwill of her neighbors? Ring the bell of the nearby castle that towers over the little suburb! Clearly if the house is in need of a makeover, then so is it's resident.

Weird Science.
For all of your geekdom needs in this fall season. Days of innocense. The odd comedy. The creepy older brother. The grandparents in the closet. And why was it that you had to keep the house clean for the maid? But the best part of all? The phone modem. Thanks to John Hughes.

Halloween Movie Pick #18

War of the Worlds.
Not the new one. The good one. The really good one. A show so horrifying that people I know...I have yet to read the book. What the War of the Worlds is most remembered for is the panic it caused in New Jersey and New York during the short radio broadcast.
Pittsburgh—A man returned home in the midst of the broadcast and found his wife, a bottle of poison in her hand, screaming: "I’d rather die this way than like that." Brevard, N. C.—Five Brevard College students fainted and panic gripped the campus for a half hour with many students fighting for telephones to inform their parents to come and get them. Kansas City—One telephone informant said he had loaded all his children into his car, had filled it with gasoline, and was going somewhere. "Where is it safe?" he wanted to know. The Associated press Bureau received queries on the "meteors" from Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Beaumont, Tex., and St. Joseph, Mo.

Halloween Movie Pick #16

Carrie.
I really adore how the movie starts with one of the most horrifying times in a girl's life. Sure, it happens to all girls, but being bombarded with a bunch of tampons by your classmates isn't the norm. The scariest element of this movie though was Carrie's mother. I don't think that I really had much sympathy for her at all. This movie would be our sweet sixteen. > : )

Halloween Movie Pick #17

Twilight Zone: The Movie.
This movie was one of my first favorite Halloween movies. Every time I hear 'The Midnight Special' oooh..... Yes, it still freaks me out, and to this day I will never pick up a stranger walking along the side of the road because you never know if it could really be some freaky demon guy that is going to chomp your head off. Watch the video below if you want to see something really scary. Not to mention the horror of tapes getting eaten.

Labels: , ,

Halloween Movie Pick #15

Shaun of the Dead.
This movie was crazy wicked. Why? Because of how subtle the zombies take over the city. Shaun's going about his day, has an odd run in or two, but you know what? It doesn't affect him that much. He knows what is important.

This is still the best part of the movie. Yes, the street scene outside of the Winchester bar on the night before Z-Day.

Halloween Movie Pick #14

Rosemary's Baby.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Maybe it was her eyes...and how quiet this movie was. Mia Farrow is always good at the quiet roles. And this movie is terrifying. You're helpless. Big and pregnant. Not sure who you can trust. Wondering if it is possible to outrun your fate. Something to watch that will make your spine tingle.

Halloween Movie Pick #13

It.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I can't think of a better movie for number thirteen. However, because I am posting this, I will not be able to look at my blog for awhile. In fact, just gathering the pictures and the video was enough to make me freak out. I know it's Tim Curry under the clown face, but my gods!!! People wonder why children are afraid of clowns! This is IT. I think this is the least scariest video out there for the movie.

You knew that it would come to this. Below is a tribute video to Tim Curry with Elvis Presley singing 'Devil in Disguise'. It also reminded me of another scary movie. Yes, yes IT did. EEEk!

And apparently he's bringing sexy back....

You can actually watch all of Legend here for goodness sake!

Halloween Movie Pick #12

Goonies.
Because they are good enough dammit!

They're just a bunch of rejects.

But they have fun.
Who here hasn't belted out a line or two from this movie? My personal favorite has always been the Truffle Shuffle.

My favorite Goonie was always Lawrence 'Chunk'. I mean, he got distracted during a highly intense scene because he smelled ice cream. He always listened to his stomach, whether it was for food, fear or anger.

Mouth was funny instructing Rosalita on how to separate all of the drugs in the Walsh's house. Sadly I could not find a video for this.
Data, his father's greatest invention.

Seeing Martha Plimpton always made me wish that River was there. And I always swore that I remembered there being an octopus in the movie. Turns out I was right.

The Fatteli's were cool too.

This movie is just a classic. Shame on you if it's not in your dvd collection....

Halloween Movie Pick #11

Worst Witch

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

This is an all-time favorite Halloween movie of mine. It's an early Fairuza Balk movie and pre-Harry Potter. The location was Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches (which included uniforms, a scaring game, chanting class, kittens, etc). I loved belting out the theme song at the top of my lungs (Growing up isn't easy! Wish the time would hurry by! Will I ever learn to flyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!). And now that I look into it, I really want to read the books!

Girls! Girls! If you're filthy, this place is for you...here is a number done by the Miss Cackle's evil twin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggCViPC98RI

I've saved the best part of the movie for last. For the entire movie, the Academy is preparing for Halloween when the Grand High Wizard will join them. And who plays Big Daddy Wiz?

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

That's right. Tim Cury.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Here is his little number from youtube - notice the big entrance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmG80v473AI

He wasn't that scary. But he was quite charming to the ladies.

Amazon has it, I doubt Wal-Mart does. It's cute and silly. And maybe, just maybe you will get a large nose with a hairy mole on it and think it sexy.

What's That Movie?

Last night I was watching Bringing Up Baby. Gods I love that movie. Mostly becuase of Katherine Hepburn. She just makes any movie that she's in, you know? And I just saw on Wiki that it was the first movie to use the word 'gay' in a homosexual way. Click here for a video clip. It's hilarious.

Anyway, as she was getting arrested for singing outside of a house, it hit me that I had seen a remake of this movie. About twenty years ago. It's obvious when you think about it: boy meets girl, boy meets big cat, girl and big cat are close, girl wants to get close to boy but boy is too afraid of big cat, big cat belongs to old rich person, boy and girl get together in the end.

C'mon. You know you know it. Two snaps and a zorro snap to whoever comments with the title in the comments of the movie that I am thinking of.

Clue: 1987.

Boil and Trouble

What should I be for Halloween?

A. Dr Frank-n-Furter (music from the RHPS soundtrack will be blasted out of the windows). I figured I would dress up in the gown, with gloves and pearls. Especially since I can't really walk in the heels. It would be a good costume for passing out candy that night. You know, something to lounge about the house in.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
B. A short, fat old lady (comes with rolling pin and flour in my hair, an apron). Glenn *might* dress up with me on this. He said something about platform boots so that his head extends beyond the doorframe. This will also give me lots of excuse to bake as well as dress Sophie up. Muahahahaahah. A la Mother Mae-Eye from Teen Titans.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
C. Role-play character (my pictures of the Rakasha did not turn out well...maybe I can turn my Heart member undead...). Er...just imagine a zombie/undead nun. Yeah...like, what would the Pure do?
D. Undead Bride. What can I say? I got Tim Burton's disease, and it will give me a reason to dress up. I just don't think I could stand to dye my wedding dress red.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
E. Suggest a costume. Your choice, picture preferred.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Now out in theatres on 3D!!!

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

A stop animation movie about a world of holidays where the leader of Halloweentown discovers Christmastown?! Why wasn't there a movie like this during my childhood? Now, if only we could get Tim Burton to make a stop animation pirate movie. I'm sure it will involve some sort of skeletal bride, maybe it will be called Pearl's Skull. What do you think? Burton is like the ghoulish prince of the theatre. Yet, any picture of him that I've seen? He has a wacky smile on. Maybe it's because he married Helena Bonham Carter. What do you think?

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Of course, one of the best things about this movie is the music. Especially the opening song. Sometimes I just want to pause the movie so that I can live in the world a little longer.

Halloween Movie Pick #9

Troll.

This movie rather terrified me as a kid. I think it was the whole ambiance of the apartment building. And...looking at the list of characters on IMDB...I'm surprised to discover that the name of the little boy was...are you ready? Harry Potter. Uh huh.

What also terrified me was how human like this troll was. And sticky. I remember him being quite sticky. And I imagined his breath smelling awful. He was no crazy-haired, fun loving troll that would just hang out on something if you clapped his hands to it. Nope. He was an ugly, stinky, sticky, hairy little troll man. The perfect size to sneak in under your parents nose and fit into your closet to get you while you were sleeping.

I wish there were more movies about trolls. Maybe in Norway.

Tales from a Haunted House Ghoul

The best Halloween experiences I've had involved working at Haunted Houses. I've worked at thwo houses and one trail.

The first house I worked at last about two years and it was a HUGE money maker. But that's only because we were the bomb. It took place in an old rectary. Need I say more? How 'bout just a little? Out front we had the tragically classic fake cemetary with Halloween sounds of horror blasting out of the windows. You would walk into an old chapel and sit in the pews while a reaper-esque preacher warned you about the creatures in the house. Behind you, up above in the choir loft was the organ player. Once out of the chapel you went thru various rooms, and up and down staircases. The first staircase you came too was lurked by Freddy. The best time was when two girls, clutching at each other, nervously walked up the case. As soon as they walked by the huge window, the drapes were thrown back and theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere's Freddy! The strobe light made an awesome effect. Now, into the exorcists bedroom we go, followed by a knife scene in the bathroom ( a la Norman Bates ). The last, and the best part, of this house was the last staircase. Instead of running down it, shrieking to get away from the Wolfman (a guy in a mask who had the stones to leap and hang from the old railings) as you SLID DOWN THE SLIDE!!! Yes, we transformed the staircase into a slide. I have yet to see it's equal. I think one of the best aspects of it was that it made you go thru in very small groups and you couldn't just run through it. It lasted for two years, but it should have been ten!

The next phase in my haunting career was working a haunted house that occupied a building, whose upstairs was condemned. I think it had something to do with the actual bats that had taken residence. Anyway, I'm the type of person that loves to play the crowd. Instead of taking a spot in the last room with the rest of my fellow haunters, I HAD to roam. And scare people just when they thought it was safe. Sadly, it almost got me kicked in the head. See, the thing is, after a person gets chased out of a room with a chain saw and gets out into normal lighting, the last thing that they want is a person leaping out from under the stairs yelling 'boo'! At the scariest times, I have discovered that cheese is best. One gal liked to run out screaming at the top of her lungs past all of the people waiting in line. 'Cuz you gotta give the people a show, as well as rope new customers in ;) One of my favorite times for this house was when they let me lead the groups into the first room. Why? Because I got to play on a staircase. Yes, yes...I had to pull a
Magenta. (Laying across the banister, and with a deep voice saying "I'm lucky, he's lucky, we're all lucky!") Hey, it got repeat business....

Lastly, I got to help make and then run a Spook Trail. It was for a younger crowd. But...I got to freak them out at the start of the trail. It's best when one is dressed in everyday garb to use a prop. Mine was a book with 'Menu' written on the cover. I'd ask for names and check off that all courses were ready to be served. Of course, with haunted houses comes your typical fair of clientelle. The happy-go-lucky kind who think it's all fun and games. These tend to laugh when going thru a house. The chicken, typically you will never see their face but you will hear them scream from their own shadow. The realist, who likes to capitalize on proving to everyone how 'lame' the haunted house is. That leads me to the smartass. From the start the smartass always has an answer for everything, and the smartass...I left for the 'beverage' section of the menu. Some weren't sure what a beverage was. I had one group though...that was adorable, most of which were so small that they were being held by their parents. After I gave my speil, I noticed that some were especially scared so I told them that if they held onto their parents tightly that nothing would happen. Several parents 'eeped' at the strength of their kids.

Now...I have been without a haunted house for some time. A ghost without a home is a sad thing. Maybe I should find a pumpkin patch and just stand in it.

Labels: ,

Halloween Movie Pick #8

Beetlejuice He claims that he is the 'ghost with the most'. But the most what? This movie was kooky, but even kookier? The music. And that I applaud! Why bother getting the popular musicians when you can grab something old that most know but never paid attention to. This is also one of Tim Burton's 'dead bride' movies, which he is quite popular of it seems. Say it once. Say it twice. Three times the charm.

Halloween Movie Pick #7

The Entity. This movie scares the bjeebus out of me! Barbara Hershey is being haunted by some...thing. And it torments and beats the crap out of her and her kids. It's an older movie and not filmed like an action movie - which is probably why I like it so much. Apparently they are attempting to re-make this movie.

Halloween Movie Pick #6

Practical Magic I heard that the director/writer of this film did some homework on sister witches. I wonder how true it is. Does 'magical dna' really separate itself in such a manner? Or is it a more comically-divine driven force like luck? This movie exemplifies again why I love Halloween so much. In the movie, every Halloween night everyone in the town gathers outside the house to watch the witches fly. No hatred. No disbelievers. Just watchers. They let themselves be open to the possibility that their next door neighbors have the ability to fly at least one night out of the year. A random link for you: http://www.practicalmagiccoach.com/

Shimmy Fest 2006

The colors were vibrant, music inspiring and all around you heard the soft 'ching-ching-chinga' sounds of women walking around and picking up costumes to try them on. It started with a zaghareet and people were pulled out of the audience to dance with the ladies.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The audience was of all ages, including several children. Before I attended the event, I mentioned that I would be going to a bellydance workshop and I noticed several people got a strange look on their face. It seems that, at least in the rural south, there are still some negative connotations attached to bellydancers.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Women of all ages danced. There were Isis wings, flame dancers as well as the swords.

Sadly my pictures of the candle dancers didn't turn out so well, and from what we were told by the announcer...it was an especially good show, especially with all of the hairspray the dancers wore.

Halloween Movie Pick #5

The old favorite, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Someone was upset that I didn't post it yet, so I must do it now. First and foremost, I highly suggest that for your first viewing of the show, that you watch it alone. Don't let yourself be dragged out to the theatre and definitely do not let yourself be wrangled into watching it with a highly-over-hyper-sugar-addict. I guess you can compare fans to RHPS to fans of the Boston Red Sox. They can be pretty extreme. There is even quite a bit of competition when it comes to live performances at theatres. But I get ahead of myself (yes, I blame it on the sugar).

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Richard O'Brien had a vision, and now audience members throw toast at it. No one is sure exactly when or where it happened but over the years of showing RHPS in theatres, audiences across the United States started 'participating' in the movie.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

For example, during the wedding at the beginning of the movie, it is customary to throw rice. People also bring water guns to create rain in the following segment of the movie. And during the big dance scene in Time Warp, you guessed it, the aisles are filled with Transylvanians dancing along. There are theatres who have regular casts that perform the movie on stage while it plays behind them.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

This show tells the story of two clean cut kids, Brad Majors and Janet Weiss, who run into car trouble and seek help at the site of light down the road. Little do they know it's coming from the place where Dr. Frank N Furter is in the midst of his maniacal experiments. The play is a rock musical, a spoof of science fiction movies, and a bizarre story of seduction and sexual confusion..(for some)

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

For those of you who want a tamer version, go watch the bunnies perform RHPS in thirty seconds. You can also watch most of the movie on You Tube. Some wish that it would disappear, but for others it is a staple. My favorite number in this has always been Sweet Transvestite just because Tim Curry always knows how to make an entrance.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

This movie was never about sex, to me. It was about open-mindedness, self discovery, and the realization that a movie could take you anywhere (fully exemplified by the end when Dr. Frank-n-Furter says that it's time for the floor show. Floor show?). This is the perfect Halloween movie because it represents our modern Halloween. The one time of year that you can dress up as a cuckoo, have fun, and no one minds. Did I mention that Meat Loaf is in it? That post was for you Mom! Love, col

Song of the Banshee

I always remember the banshee! from Darby O'Gill and the Little People, but I never heard much about what a banshee really was other than a bringer of death (someone to avoid). As in today's culture you don't really learn about true histories of creatures; instead you are left to divulge the information for yourself from the internet or learn a bit about them in Charmed. I figured banshees! were mostly Irish but I didn't realize that they were originally family oriented.
According to tradition, the banshee can only cry for five major Irish families: the O'Neills, the O'Briens, the O'Connors, the O'Gradys and the Kavanaghs. Intermarriage has since extended this select list.
