You Wanna See Something Really Scary?

I’ve been having a lot of thoughts lately about music. Reflecting on where I was when I heard Madonna’s “Playground” and how it just made me cry until everything was still. Or that silly song “Jump” by CrissCross and how it will jerk me back to the eighth grade when all of the good little Catholic boys and girls were learning to become ganstas. How I still don’t know what OPP means. “C’mon boy, take a walk on the wild side” and though the “reflections of my mind” will never scare me as much as the “Midnight Special” thanks to Dan Aykroyd and Albert Brooks in ‘Twilight Zone: The Movie’. When I was younger I was an outcast for listening to Mamas and the Papas, Beach Boys, and the Carpenters. I also had a weird fascination for imitating the dance moves from ‘Thriller’ but was never brave enough to show off in front of my friends. I have always felt more comfortable listening to the Supremes than I have listening to Sublime. Opening credits to ‘China Beach’ still brings an uncontrollable shiver over me. I don’t know what it is about the music. The higher state of consciousness that it brings us to. The music feels for us and it’s a natural rush letting it flow through our blood, carrying all of the fear and aggression and replacing it with a calm adrenaline rush. It’s the thrill that keeps our hope alive.
